The New Mexico Early Childhood Funders Group has come together to coordinate grantmaking and mobilize trustees around advocacy with the goal of improving public policy that addresses home visiting. Our efforts include:
- Statewide meetings to determine common early childhood priorities among foundations.
- Educating policymakers about the benefits and accountability of high quality home visiting services and a series of “Building the Bench” events leading to the creation of a bi-partisan “Early Childhood Caucus” with 20 members.
- Joint funding of credible advocacy partners, including, active-duty police officers and sheriffs, retired United States admirals and generals, and pediatricians.
- Social and print media, including opinion pieces authored by foundation trustees and unusual advocates in the state’s most important newspapers.
- Joint training for grantees as well as the usual advocacy messengers to coordinate messaging during the legislative session.

2016 Accomplishments - The Year So Far
With just $25,000 in advocacy grants invested in four “unusual messengers” to promote home visiting, we saw nearly $1.8 million in new money for high-quality home visiting services. While we do not take full credit for this funding expansion, legislators indicate our efforts influenced budget debates.
